O Reader, Where Art Thou?

In which I wonder aloud who all my readers actually are!

Starting a blog is something of an act of faith, of the ‘build it and they will come’ variety (to continue yesterday’s baseball theme). It necessarily starts off as a performance without an audience. And although my readship remains, shall we say, ‘select’, it’s been fun to watch how the numbers of visitors and feed subscribers have been trending very slowly upwards.

But curiosity has got the best of me! So this post is an open call to anyone reading it to drop by and leave a quick comment. If you can say who you are, where you’re from, and why you’re reading my ramblings on board game design, then I’d be (as us Brits say) chuffed to bits. (Being ‘chuffed to bits’ is, as painful as it sounds, a good thing, in case you were wondering.)

Perhaps, like Jackson Pope you are an adventuring game publisher, or like W. Eric Martin a tireless reporter of the industry, or like Dennis Hoyle an educator interested in applying board game mechanics in the workplace, or like Lorien Green a documentary film-maker interested in designer board games, or like me a hobbyist game designer with dreams of board gaming glory… or none of the above.

So, who, where and why are you? (With grateful thanks in advance for your time!)

Well, seeing as I really enjoy your blog, I'll take the bait.

My name is Roberta, and I'm a boardgame enthusiast and amateur game designer from the middle of nowhere, Northern BC, Canada (50km north of Terrace and 50km south of New Aiyansh in the low-res part of Google Earth, for those who must know).

As to the why, well, I find boardgame design fascinating as a mental exercise, and I also appreciate good writing and interesting ideas and opinions, and I find a bit of everything here. Keep up the good work!!

The comment above has an obsolete link on my name- this one is current (I hope- this is a new commenting system to me and there sure are a lot of choices!!)

Hi Brett,

I read your blog. Probably like many of us, I'm a designer wannabe. I hope to self-publish a game later this year.

Hey Brett, I'm a board game geek located in Washington DC, USA. I recently started reading your blog and have enjoyed the unique content you provide. Keep up the great work!

Hey Brett,

Not sure I would call myself an educator, but I do work at Mississippi State University where I have had the amazing opportunity to run wild with some of my board game ideas for management. I think that board game mechanics have incredible potential for application, and I like how your blog gets to the essence of the game, which is both the part that is the most valuable to me--and most interesting.

Keep up the good work and thanks for the link!

Hey Brett,

I'm a current student who recently discovered a love for all things board game. I'm an amateur (to the greatest extent of the word) designer and general hobbyist, and I write/draw a board game blog of my own that mostly focuses on abstract strategy (my evil master plan is to use it to publicize my own games once it gets big...ger). I love your blog, though -- always something new and interesting every time. Keep up the good work!

Hi,

I am an amateur designer in a suburb of Tulsa, OK, USA. I think I saw you post a link to the blog over on BGDF a while back, and have been following it since.

Cheers,
Mike

Brett,,

I've been following you for quite a while. I'm a player from Seattle with a collection and occasional designs. I like your design sensibilities.

Hi Brett,

I just recently started occasionally reading your (and others') blogs.

I'm from Tucson, AZ, and I'm an amateur game designer and developer... soon to be published, as Tasty Minstrel Games is a new company publishing one of my games and another game I helped develop.

I have a game design blog as well, and I'm always wondering who's reading - I like the idea of a post like this one! I tried once and didn't get much response - perhaps I'll try again :)

G'day Brett,

I came here via a search for 'theme'. Nice set of articles! Thanks for taking time (lots of) to set your thoughts down so lucidly.

Cheers, Mike

I've added a link at Brickset.com to your article about LEGO games. Thanks for rounding up all the info; as you say it's been scant. Release is July 1st, BTW.

Huw, webmaster Brickset.com

Huw - Thanks for the link and the tip about the release date. Not long now!

Everyone - Thanks for responding to my post! It's great to hear from you all.
